Advocating for the visual arts has been my lifelong passion. Inspired by a long list of artists and educators, I always knew this was my calling. As a native of central Texas, my family’s roots run deep here and I have raised two beautiful children in a place I proudly call home. After graduating from Baylor University with a degree in elementary education and a specialization in art education, I was fortunate to start my career at Killeen ISD. During my 10-year tenure at KISD, I began to integrate art into my daily curriculum and even started an after school art club. As interest grew, KISD administration took note of the positive impact art education had on the students and I was given the opportunity to implement a comprehensive art program. I orchestrated several school wide fundraisers, large art shows, field trips, and school beautification projects and subsequently was the honored with the Killeen Daily Herald’s Excellence in Teaching Award.
I have a strong commitment to professional development and have attended numerous state and national conferences for art educators. As an artist, I have had my artwork on display at Austin Community College and the Dougherty Arts Center in Austin. Time and time again, top universities cite the lack of critical thinking as a barrier to the success of incoming students. In my years of working with students, through my own artistic endeavors, and ultimately supported by countless studies, it is without question the visual arts and the artistic process help to develop the problem-solving skills and cognitive thinking abilities our colleges and universities are looking for in their students.
I came up with the idea of Tap Tap Art Studios after teaching a lesson on the Tap Tap buses in Haiti. I was fascinated by the colorful artistic design and I was inspired to purchase and re-purpose a school bus into my first art school. From the Tap Tap bus, to a bricks and mortar location and most recently, an expansion of the facility that will culminate in a state-of-the art studio, it has been quite a journey. I am proud to lead a dedicated and talented staff as we continue our mission to encourage a love for the arts and a confidence to create.
